Rotary International Mission Statement

The mission of Rotary International is to assist and guide Rotarians and Rotary clubs to accomplish the object of Rotary, to ensure Rotary's continuing relevance, and to help build a better world, emphasizing service activities by individuals and groups that enhance the quality of life and human dignity, encouraging high ethical standards, and creating greater understanding among all people to advance the search of peace in the world.

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to promote:

  • The development of acquaintances as an opportunity for service;
  • High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
  • The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

President's Message

Nome is a small, isolated community in an environment that is often unforgiving and always beautiful. We rely on one another here.

This makes Nome a symbol for the world. Substitute "Humankind" for "Nome," and the paragraph above is no less true.

Rotary is a way we connect to the rest of the world through service. Through Rotary, we can think globally when we act locally. For instance, we recently helped lead our little town's effort to send aid to the areas of Sri Lanka devastated by the Christmas tsunami. Our Rotary college scholarship recipients, even if they do not return to Nome, make us proud for their accomplishments in school and beyond. These fine young people are another contribution from Nome to the world.

Thank you for visiting our website. Please join us. We rely on one another here.

Sincerely,

Erin M. Lillie

Nome Rotary President

How to Join

An association of nearly 32,000 autonomous clubs in 166 countries, Rotary International is one of the world's largest service organizations. The goal for a club's membership is an up-to-date and progressive representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests. An important distinction between Rotary and other organizations is that membership in Rotary is by invitation. Rotary clubs invite individuals to join and become members. Membership is vital to a Rotary club's operations and community service activities. A primary goal of the club is to continually expand the club with committed members who have the interest and ability to get involved in service and humanitarian projects. Prospective members must:

  • hold — or be retired from — a professional, proprietary, executive, or managerial position;
  • have the capacity to meet the club's weekly attendance or community project participation requirements;
  • live or work within the locality of the club or the surrounding area.

Often a person being considered for membership is invited by a member/sponsor to attend one or more club meetings to learn more about Rotary. The sponsor may then submit the name of the candidate to the club's membership committee. Any individual who is interested in membership but doesn't know any Rotarians can contact Nome Rotary directly. We have weekly meetings every Wednesday at 12 noon at the Polar Cafe. We look forward to meeting you!
